Poem – You Don’t Look Blind

“You don’t look blind,” they often say,
As I fumble and bumble through my day.
With a white cane tapping on the ground,
I must be the stealthiest kiwi around!
“I saw you reading just last night,
With a book held close and a squint so tight.”
Well, Sherlock, here’s a clue for you,
Magnifying glasses do what they’re supposed to do!
“Your eyes look normal, not hazy or gray,
Are you sure you can’t see okay?”
Oh, bless your heart, that’s good to know,
I’ll tell my retinas they can put on a show.
“You text on your phone, not using Braille,
Even swipe like a pro without fail!”
Well, here’s a twist, a modern delight,
Technology’s nifty and the font’s set to “sight.”
“You walked right past me the other day,
Didn’t even wave, just strolled away.”
My dear mate, it wasn’t disdain,
I just mistook you for a parked plane.
“I saw you driving, is that allowed?
You seemed quite confident, not even cowed.”
Ah, my secret’s out, but rest assured,
That was Uber, my vision’s insured.
“You don’t look blind,” it’s clear you see,
But I navigate my world differently.
So, if I trip or miss your smile,
Just laugh along, it’s part of my style.
Next time you wonder how I get by,
With eyes that play tricks, and lights that lie,
Remember, vision isn’t all in the sight,
It’s in the heart, where things are just right.
